The Story Behind the "War of the Roses"

History has a way of leaving its mark. Not only in the stories we tell, but in the places we stand, the memories we carry and the things that remain long after the battle has ended.

The War of the Roses was more than a struggle between two houses. It was a time of loyalty and betrayal, ambition and sacrifice. It was a period when the decisions of a few could change the lives of many. Yet beyond the names, the crowns and the battles were ordinary people caught within a conflict that would shape the course of a nation.

When I began this painting, I wanted to capture something of that sense of conflict, the beauty that can exist alongside violence, and the fragility of life caught between opposing forces.

Perhaps that is what draws us back to history. We look at the past and see battles that have long since ended, yet somehow, we recognise something of ourselves within them.

The roses may have faded, the battlefields may have fallen silent, but their story remains.
