The Story Behind “One Struggle”
Cardiff Bay, Tiger Bay. The heat of the summer, the turmoil of the docks. The sweat, the dirt, the blood. It is all hands to the task. The ship heavily laden with coal awaiting departure to lands beyond. The profit of the Valley’s coal mines being registered in the Harbour Master’s leger.
One last load to make the cargo complete. But it is the hardest load, the load that needs to be hoisted the furthest and highest. The load that needs the strength, the determination and the coming together of all. Sailors of different backgrounds united in their quest to overcome the toughest of difficulties, to pay for their food, their rent, and their families future.
“One Struggle” represents not only the struggle of where these people came from in search of work and a newfound existence but is also a reflection of the multicultures of Cardiff Bay and the families that now live side by side as ancestors of the very first sailors who travelled to and found their roots in what was then known as Tiger Bay.
