The Story Behind “My Little Urchin”
Remember those days when you were carefree and untouched by anything? Remember when your mother kicked you out of the house saying that she didn’t want to see you until you were hungry?
And you went off on one of those long all-day adventures that only ever existed in your mind and the minds of the merry band of crazy heroes who joined you.
And the time came when you had to go home. But you didn’t as you were still fighting those baddies, defending your fortress, discovering the unfound, digging, breaking, laughing, building, crying, being a child with not a care to worry about, as the waste ground was a worldly endless landscape of good and evil so far from home.
And so, she came to collect you, unimpressed by the state she found you in. Dirty face, ripped clothes, missing items, grazed knees, but full of life and tales to tell.
With our neighbourhoods changing before our very eyes, year after year, we fondly look back on the ‘better times’ when the sun shone brighter and longer, the days stretched endless before us, and the people looked out for you more. Front doors were open, families intermixed, and poverty was just a way of living.
Those were the days when we all earned the reputation of being that special Little Urchin in our mother’s eyes.
