The Story Behind "Love in Every Port"
With the industries of coal and slate and the business of shipping in Tiger Bay, comes another side of life. The working class would turn their hands to anything to make ends meet as the rich got richer and poverty ensued.
The red-light district of the local area, famously known as Tiger Bay, thrived with visiting ships from afar, sailors seeking that one night of escape before back on the treacherous seas, never knowing whether they would make it or not to the next port safely.
And so, the ladies of the night were don their finest evocative clothes, scrub their working hands, and paint their cracked nails with tardy varnishes that had just come to fashion.
Two Victorian shillings for a night or less, the equivalent of forty pounds today, saw a sailor leave and report to his ship to seek his next love across the sea.
