The Story Behind"Bread of Heaven II"
The hardship, the labour, the physical effort by so many men to extract this product from the mines in the prosperous times of the turn of the century, made Cardiff Bay a rich dockland.
Coal was railed from the valleys to Cardiff Bay and sent around the world as the owner of the docklands, the Third Marquis of Bute, became the richest man in the world at that time.
Life of the miners were shortened due to the dangers they faced and the diseases they contracted. Their hands tell their own story.
The coal became engrained in their skin in each and every cut and groove, becoming the very part of their soul.
The intense labour, day in day out, to put food on the table for their family caused the very substance that they worked to be known as the “bread of heaven”.
